Tractor tire repair and replacement on the farm

Dustin goes directly into the field to repair and service tractor tires, and replaces them on site when a repair will not do. Farm calls go out up to 70 miles from the shop in Scottsville.

Reasons farmers call

A tractor tire that goes down in the field is hard to move and harder to haul. A farm call brings the tire work to the tractor instead.

  • A flat, or a tire that keeps losing air
  • A cut or puncture in the tread or sidewall
  • A cracked, bent or leaking valve stem
  • A tire that has come off the bead
  • A tire that is worn out or torn and needs replacing

  • B: Valve stem: cracked, bent or leaking
  • C: Damage: a cut or puncture in the tread
  • D: Lugs: worn or torn lugs change the job

Before you call, have the size ready

The first thing Dustin asks is the tire size. Have it in front of you when you call, and mention any brand you have in mind.

  1. The size off the sidewall

It is molded into the sidewall near the rim, marked A on the drawing. Read it out exactly as it is written.

  2. Any brand you have in mind

If you want a certain tire, say so up front.

  3. Where it is

For a farm call, where the tractor or machine sits and how to reach it. For a car or truck, the year, make and model.

  4. What happened

A flat, a cut in the tread (C), a leaking valve stem (B), torn or worn lugs (D), or a shake, a pull or a noise on the road.

How a farm call works

  1. Call with the details

Where the equipment is, which tire, what happened, and the size off the sidewall.

  2. Settle where it gets done

On the farm, or at the shop. Ask about your location when you call.

  3. Repair or replace

The tire is repaired, or replaced when a repair will not hold.

  4. Back to work

No trailer ride to town for a tire that size.

Help the trip go smoothly

These are not requirements, just things that make the work easier when the truck gets there.

  • Say where the tractor sits, and how a truck can reach it.
  • Firm, level ground under the tractor helps if you can get it there.
  • Mention whether the tire has fluid in it.
  • If no one answers, leave a message with where you are. Dustin may be out on another call.

At the shop instead

Not every tractor job needs a farm call. The same repair and replacement work is done at the shop in Scottsville, if it is easier to bring the tire or the machine in.

What to expect when you call

Calls only, to the shop landline. No forms, no email and no texts.

  1. Dustin answers, or the machine does

It is a landline with an answering machine. If he is out on a farm call, leave your name, your number and where the machine is.

  2. He asks for the size

And any tire you have in mind. Read the size off the sidewall before you call.

  3. You settle where it gets done

On the farm, where the machine sits, or at the shop in Scottsville.

Questions people ask

Do you come out to the farm, or do I bring the tractor in?

Both. Tractor tires are repaired and replaced on the farm, where the tractor sits, and the same work is done at the shop in Scottsville. Cars and trucks are worked on at the shop.

How far do farm calls go?

Up to 70 miles from the shop in Scottsville. Not sure whether your place is in range? Say where the tractor is when you call.

Do you put fluid in tractor tires?

Yes. Liquid ballast is added to tractor tires, for example when a tire has run low after being flat a few times, or when a tractor came without it.
